What is early interceptive orthodontics?

Early interceptive orthodontics, also known as Phase 1 treatment, focuses on guiding dental and jaw development while a child is still growing. An early evaluation allows our orthodontists to identify developing concerns, monitor changes over time, and determine whether treatment could provide a meaningful benefit.

Not every child needs early orthodontic treatment. When intervention is appropriate, it may help create space for permanent teeth, improve bite development, and address certain concerns before they become more complex. Our approach is always considered and individualized, with treatment recommended only when the timing and clinical need are right.

The benefits of early interceptive orthodontics

When early treatment is appropriate, it allows us to work with your child’s natural growth and development.

Guiding jaw and tooth development

Thoughtfully timed treatment can help guide jaw growth and permanent tooth eruption as your child’s smile develops.

Reduces future treatment complexity

Certain orthodontic issues can be easier to manage while the jaws are still growing, allowing us to take advantage of an important window of development.

Creates a strong foundation for the future

Early care can support healthier bite function and alignment while setting the stage for your child’s smile as they continue to grow.

Our early interceptive orthodontic treatments

Invisalign First

Designed specifically for growing smiles, Invisalign First uses a series of clear, removable aligners to address certain orthodontic concerns during Phase 1 treatment. When appropriate, it can help guide alignment, create room for developing permanent teeth, and improve bite relationships while offering a comfortable, flexible experience for younger patients.

Invisalign palatal expander

The Invisalign palatal expander offers a modern approach to widening a developing upper jaw. Its digitally designed system can help create additional space and improve bite development while offering an alternative to more traditional expansion methods. Our orthodontists carefully evaluate your child’s growth and clinical needs to determine whether this approach is appropriate.

Space Maintenance

When a baby tooth is lost earlier than expected, neighboring teeth may begin to shift into the open space. A space maintainer can help preserve the room needed for the permanent tooth to emerge properly.

We recommend space maintenance selectively and continue to monitor development as your child grows.

Palatal expansion

For children with a narrow upper jaw, palatal expansion can gently create additional width while growth is still occurring. This may improve bite relationships and create more room for permanent teeth to develop.

Timing matters, which is why our orthodontists carefully evaluate growth before recommending expansion.

Limited braces

In some cases, a small number of braces may be used during Phase 1 treatment to address a specific alignment or positioning concern.

Rather than beginning comprehensive orthodontic treatment early, this focused approach allows us to make a targeted correction while keeping your child’s long-term development in mind.

The phase one process

01

Complimentary orthodontic evaluation

We’ll begin by getting to know your child and carefully evaluating their developing smile with digital scans and photos when appropriate. Our orthodontists assess tooth eruption, jaw growth, and bite development to determine whether treatment is needed now or simply worth monitoring.

02

Personalized treatment planned around growth

If early treatment is recommended, Dr. Upatham or Dr. Wong will create a plan based on your child’s individual needs and stage of development. We’ll explain what we see, why treatment may be beneficial, and what you can expect before moving forward.

03

Thoughtful monitoring over time

Growth continues long after Phase 1 treatment is complete. We’ll continue watching your child’s smile as permanent teeth emerge, recommending additional treatment only if and when it becomes appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

At what age should my child see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial orthodontic evaluation around age seven. An early visit does not necessarily mean your child will need treatment. Often, the best recommendation is simply to monitor their development over time.

Does every child need early interceptive orthodontics?

No. Early orthodontic treatment is beneficial only in certain situations. Our approach is conservative, and we recommend Phase 1 care when there is a clear reason to address a concern during growth rather than waiting.

Will my child still need braces later?

Possibly. Some children benefit from a second phase of orthodontic treatment once more or all permanent teeth have erupted. Others may require less treatment later. Your child’s needs will depend on how their smile and jaws continue to develop.

Dr. Upatham went out of his way to see our daughter even though we didn’t have an appt. He got her wire fixed which took away her discomfort. He was very nice and thoughtful. 5 stars!

Incredible care and knowledge:) My son is always a little anxious when in a dental chair and at his first visit he didn’t even ask to hold my hand and asked when we could return! A huge win!
