What is an orthodontic emergency?

Most orthodontic emergencies involve discomfort or an issue with an appliance rather than a true medical emergency. A loose bracket, poking wire, or damaged appliance can be frustrating, but these concerns can often be managed quickly and comfortably.

For our current patients, we’re always here to help determine what needs immediate attention and what can safely wait until your next visit. Our priority is to keep you comfortable while ensuring your treatment continues as planned.

Why timely orthodontic care matters

Knowing what to do when something feels off can make the situation much easier to manage.

Prompt guidance

Many orthodontic concerns can be temporarily managed at home with simple, personalized instructions from our team.

Protects your progress

Addressing loose or damaged appliances early can help prevent unnecessary interruptions to your treatment.

Familarity matters

Because we understand your treatment plan and progress, we can recommend the most appropriate next step for your individual situation.

Common orthodontic emergencies

Loose or broken brackets

A bracket may loosen after eating something hard or sticky or following an accidental impact. If it remains attached to the wire and is not causing discomfort, it can often stay in place until we advise you otherwise.

If it begins to irritate your mouth or feels unstable, contact our office and we’ll guide you through what to do next.

Poking or broken wires

Occasionally, a wire can shift or break and begin irritating the cheek or gums. Orthodontic wax can often provide temporary relief, and in some cases, the wire may be gently repositioned. If the irritation continues, give our team a call so we can determine whether an adjustment is needed.

Lost or broken appliances

Expanders, space maintainers, retainers, and other orthodontic appliances can occasionally become loose, damaged, or misplaced.Let us know as soon as possible so we can evaluate whether the appliance needs to be repaired or replaced and help keep treatment progressing as planned.

What to do in an orthodontic emergency

01

Take a closer look

Identify what is causing the discomfort and when the issue began. Many orthodontic concerns look more serious than they are and can be managed temporarily with a few simple steps.

02

Make yourself comfortable

Orthodontic wax and warm saltwater rinses can often ease irritation until you can speak with our team. Avoid forcing or removing any appliance unless we specifically advise you to do so.

03

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

Is an orthodontic emergency the same as a dental emergency?

No. Orthodontic emergencies generally involve an appliance or treatment-related concern, such as a loose bracket or irritating wire. Severe tooth pain, significant swelling, or dental trauma may require care from your general dentist or another appropriate dental provider.

Do you offer after-hours or weekend emergency appointments?

If you are experiencing significant orthodontic discomfort after hours, call our office and follow the instructions provided. We’ll help determine the most appropriate next step and whether an in-office visit is necessary.

Can I wait until my next appointment?

In many cases, yes. However, if an issue is causing ongoing discomfort, involves a damaged appliance, or could interfere with your treatment, it is best to contact us so we can advise you directly.

Dr. Upatham went out of his way to see our daughter even though we didn’t have an appt. He got her wire fixed which took away her discomfort. He was very nice and thoughtful. 5 stars!

Incredible care and knowledge:) My son is always a little anxious when in a dental chair and at his first visit he didn’t even ask to hold my hand and asked when we could return! A huge win!
